Manchester’s Modernist Heroines is a collaboration between Manchester Modernist Society, Shrieking Violet arts and culture zine and The LRM (Loiterers Resistance Movement).  It was borne out of frustration that women are almost invisible in the history of 20th century Manchester.

We went on a quest, asking people to nominate remarkable women they wanted to celebrate and we uncovered many fascinating stories.  The emphasis of the project was on women with connections to the North West who made outstanding contributions to areas of work traditionally deemed male.  Those focused on during the walk span the fields of invention, aviation, media, science, design and architecture.  The first tour took place in 2011 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.

A partnership approach was, and is, central to this project.  Manchester Modernist Society exists to raise awareness and appreciation of modern architecture and the urban environment through walks, talks and creative collaborations.  A special edition of Shrieking Violet was produced including creative responses to the subject.

The LRM have created a tour linking spaces associated with, or influenced by, this work. There are no blue plaques or stately homes on this tour; there is an absence of official monuments so we look for echoes, influences and wider legacies.  To The LRM history is permeable, participatory and opinionated, so please bring stories to share along the way.

Expect a guided walk that is equal measures of performance, rant, tribute and tour.

The small but important print: Please be advised this walk contains explicit feminist geography, frank discussion of sex, disability, abortion and swearing.  If you have any queries or concerns please contact loitering2016@gmail.com.
